Special Olympics of Missouri 2012 Columbia Polar Plunge

Get ready for the Special Olympics of Missouri 2012 Columbia Polar Plunge on February 18, 2012 over at Stephens Lake Park.

For decades, Special Olympics athletes have been breaking records and inspiring others with their bravery and sportsmanship. The Polar Plunge is your chance to show some bravery of your own.

Participants register as individuals or teams and create a fundraising page. This page can be emailed to family and friends to collect safe and secure donations. Then come out on Plunge day to take a quick dip in the frigid winter waters

The Bear Essentials:
1. The Polar Plunge is open to anyone 10 and older.
2. Plungers use their fundraising pages to raise the minimum of $75.
3. Plungers break records of their own by raising much more than the minimum to earn cool prizes!
4. Plungers wear shoes and at least a bathing suit (no wet suits allowed). Costumes encouraged!

If you are not able to be a part of the Polar Plunge, do consider helping out the Special Olympics in your area by volunteering your time or with a financial donation.  The Special Olympics is a wonderful organization that gives a lot to those with disabilities so that they too can be champions!

Mizzou 2012 Football Schedule for SEC conference games

The Mizzou 2012 Football Schedule for SEC conference games has been released and has the University of Missouri Tigers playing at home conference games against Georgia (September 8), Vanderbilt (October 6), Alabama (October 13), and Kentucky (October 27, also slated as Homecoming).  There is also a carry over of Arizona State (September 15) which was a part of their 2012 schedule under the Big 12 conference.

Word is that the Tigers are hoping to lock up 2 of the 3 remaining non-conference slots with Miami Ohio and Southern Illinois.  No word yet, at least not at the time of this blog post, about the oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi between MU and KU continuing.  MU has taken the first step by offering a game date of November 17, but KU has yet to respond.  Here's to hoping that the rivalry continues...

If you are looking to come to Columbia for any of the games, please be aware we fill up quickly.  Homecoming (Oct. 27) is currently filled up as is the match up between Alabama and the Tigers.  We do require a two night minimum for all home football games and there is a 3 week cancellation policy.  If you want to get a early 'heads up' should their be a cancellation, please go out and Like our Facebook page.  This is the media we now use for making announcements such as those and it will give you an immediate update should something open up.

Give us a call today to check on the most current availability or book online to secure your spot right away.

Thank you for reading our blog post today. We hope you enjoyed it and please feel free to share any comments with us about it and don't forget to book your Columbia lodging at the University Avenue Bed and Breakfast.

Young Frankenstein comes to University Concert Series

Young Frankenstein comes to the University Concert Series at Jesse Auditorium on January 18, 2012 at 7p.m. for a wickedly inspired re-imagining of the legend based on Mel Brook's classic comedy.

The story follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Together with his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that’s Eye-gor), his curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and in spite of his incredibly self-involved madcap fiance Elizabeth, Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster– but not without scary and quite often hilarious complications.
With such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” Young Frankenstein is scientifically-proven, monstrously good entertainment…and the only experiment in the largest tuxedo ever made.

True False Festival 2012, Columbia Missouri film festival

The True/False Festival returns for 2012 March 1-4 as the premier Columbia Missouri film festival of the year.
The festival highlights innovative work with a cinematic scope, creative takes on contemporary currents, and most of all work that provokes dialogue about its subject and the documentary form itself.

For four days, downtown Columbia, Missouri is transformed into a small-town Midwestern utopia.  Most films come freshly discovered from Sundance, Toronto and other festivals, others appear mysteriously before their official premieres elsewhere. Sandwiched between the nonstop movies, there are parties, host debates and field trips, and challenge local filmmakers to re imagine the possibilities of nonfiction film making.

New for 2012! All festival theaters will be located in downtown Columbia, all within easy walking distance of one another and there are going to be two new venues this year: Jesse Auditorium on the MU campus and The Picturehouse, located inside the Missouri United Methodist Church across the street from Shakespeare's Pizza on 9th Street.

Currently the University Avenue Bed and Breakfast is fully book and there is a full wait list so please visit the Columbia Visitors Bureau for information about other lodging choices.
